Unlocking the Gaits of Your Patients
Dr Clayton Shiu breaks down the anatomy of a gait cycle, the five essential gait patterns every Acupuncturist should recognise on sight, and how Nanopuncture's functional neurology approach translates gait assessment into specific, reproducible needling strategies.

Is This Webinar For You?
Every patient who walks into your clinic gives you a diagnosis before they even sit down — you just may not have been trained to read it. Gait is one of the clearest external expressions of neurological health, yet for most Acupuncturists it remains background noise: something noticed, rarely interpreted, and almost never built into a treatment strategy. Parkinson's, stroke, cerebellar atrophy, peripheral neuropathy, ADHD — each produces a distinct, recognisable movement pattern, and each demands a different point selection and needling approach.
This webinar gives you that framework. Dr Clayton Shiu will break down the anatomy of a gait cycle, walk you through the five essential gait patterns every Acupuncturist should be able to recognise on sight, and show you how to differentiate central from peripheral involvement — cerebellar versus Parkinsonian versus stroke-related presentations — in under twenty seconds. You'll also see how Taiji, applied correctly as a Daoyin exercise, can become a direct treatment tool you can teach to patients the same day, and how Nanopuncture's functional neurology approach translates gait assessment into specific, reproducible needling strategies. Hosted by Dr Scott Ling and conducted in English.
What This Webinar Covers
The Anatomy of a Gait: Step vs. Stride
Dr Shiu breaks down the biomechanical components of a normal gait cycle, clarifying the distinction between a step and a stride and identifying the specific phases where neurological breakdowns tend to show up first.
Taiji as Gait Training: A Movement-Based Treatment Tool
Learn how correctly taught Taiji functions as a Daoyin practice — a therapeutic movement exercise that can directly retrain gait patterns — with a specific exercise you can teach patients in-clinic immediately.
The 5 Essential Gait Patterns You Need to Recognise
The five clinically significant gait patterns every Acupuncturist should be able to identify, and what each reveals about central versus peripheral nervous system involvement — including cerebellar, Parkinsonian, and stroke-related presentations.
Treating Gait Disorders with Nanopuncture
See how Nanopuncture applies objective functional neurology and advanced needling technique to each gait pattern — translating a diagnostic observation made in seconds into a targeted, repeatable treatment protocol.
Case Study: The Cerebellar Atrophy Gait
Dr Shiu walks through a real case of cerebellar atrophy where the gait pattern itself was the key diagnostic clue — and how recognising this specific presentation early changed the entire treatment approach and outcome.
Case Study: The ADHD Case That Changed a Student's Grades
How gait-informed assessment uncovered a neurological pattern behind a case of ADHD, and how treatment targeted at that pattern led to a measurable shift in the patient's academic performance.
Case Study: The Foot Drop That Wasn't a Stroke
A foot drop case initially assumed to be stroke-related turned out, on closer gait analysis, to stem from a hip injury instead. Dr Shiu breaks down how this distinction was made and why it matters for treatment selection.
Live Q&A with Dr Clayton Shiu
Bring your clinical questions. Dr Shiu closes the session with live Q&A, addressing specific cases and helping you apply gait assessment directly to the patients already in your clinic.
Meet the Teacher & Host
Teacher
Dr Clayton Shiu
Dr Clayton Shiu completed his PhD at Tianjin University of TCM under Dr Shi Xue Min, the pioneer of Xing Nao Kai Qiao (XNKQ). Layering that lineage over 20 years of sports medicine practice, Dr Shiu built Nanopuncture as a system that fuses functional neurological examination, movement analysis, and modern diagnostic technology with classical needling technique.
Host
Dr Scott Ling
Dr Scott Ling is the founder and clinical director of SustainHealth Academy. With more than 15 years in clinical practice, he attends and curates advanced Chinese Medicine training globally.
